From Black Book magazine Winter 98/99 issue:

Interview With Alex Garland:

Garland has just completed a round of interviews to promote The Tessaract (his latest book). Most of these were conducted by breathless young women journalists eager to comment on his looks (good), his new found wealth (Considerable), his famous girlfriend (the actress Paloma Baeza), and his relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio (distant to non-existent).

In the 2 years since I first met Alex Garland, his life has changed utterly - and it is soon again, even more dramatically. For hurtling towards him is a juggernaut in the form of Danny Bolye's film of the Beach, a film that will surely act as a global flyer for the novel on which it is based, propelling Garland towards improbable wealth and into the arms of a grateful movie industry. He has read the script and concedes that it is good, radically good, "So many film adaptations destroy the original book but in this case, I am very impressed. I know they will make a good - possibly great - film and I am just so curious to see it".
